Adult Hebrew and Prayer Class
June 15 to August 30, 2007
by Barbara Cohen, Chair
I met Lia Rosen at Eliana Ballen's Bat Mitzvah at Nahalot Shalom in Albuquerque in March. Lia’s struck me with her strong and spiritual Torah chanting and I felt right away that I would like to learn from Lia and bring her to Santa Fe for an Adult Hebrew and Prayer class. This is our opportunity. We need beginning and intermediate students. Please come (drop in to one class or many at $20 per class meeting for 1 1/2 hours at Congregation Beit Tikva.)
Teacher: Lia Rosen, a resident of Albuquerque, has been hired for two artist-residencies, teaching in the Santa Fe Children's Museum and O'keeffe Museum Girl's Leadership Program this summer. The class dates listed below, on the days she will be available in Santa Fe, will provide an Introduction to Hebrew, Level 1 & 2 for Adults this summer at Beit Tikva.
Lia lived in Israel the year when she was 13 years old. She has lived in New Mexico for 20 years, where she has integrated Jewish art and prayer in her ceramics. During the last 30 years, Lia has taught Hebrew language, Holidays, Prayer, Jewish Women's Rituals and Adult Continuing Education in Jewish Studies. This fall, Lia has been awarded an Arts Fellowship at the Drisha Institute for Jewish Education in New York City's Upper West Side.
STUDENTS: For those adults who can read Hebrew in the prayer book, but may not know the meaning of what they are reading, but mainly with an interest in learning more.
The textbook for the class is "Aleph Isn’t Tough, Level 1" or "Aleph Isn't Enough, an Introduction to Hebrew for Adults 2." The book is available at Amazon, online booksellers for new, used and out of print books for $10.88 for Level 1 and $12.24 for Level 2 plus shipping. Lea’s charge for the class is $20/class per student.
